This posting seeks qualified candidates for an IT System Architect I in Network Implementation on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester MN. The Network Implementation unit is a team of about twenty-five skilled network professionals whose shared primary responsibility is to build out Mayo’s enterprise data network including its LAN, WAN/MAN, data center network, and wireless network, many various appliances supporting underlying network services, and overlaid advanced security features.

With limited direction, an IT Systems Architect I is considered a technical leader. He/she is expected to assist in instructing, directing, and assisting other staff. Effectively works with other staff both within and outside the immediate work area as assigned to investigate and resolve problems. Has responsibility for technical architecture and recommendations related to overall systems operations. Is expected to serve as a top level technical contributor with advanced knowledge and experience in the area of Systems administration, Database administration, Network administration, or other areas of specific expertise. Maintains a high level of technical expertise and studies vendor products and services to identify those which best meet the needs of the Mayo Clinic. Assists in providing integrated team leadership for support and maintenance of hardware, software, and services. Recommends procedures and policies that will improve the workflow both within the work unit and across various work units and sites. An IT Systems Architect I is expected to possess and maintain a strong working knowledge of several multi-platform technical environments. Is willing to assume a leadership role to direct and coordinate the work of other staff as assigned. Willingly participates on workgroups, subcommittees, committees or task forces, providing leadership in the technical design, selection, and application of the information systems resources to satisfy complex system requirements that meet the needs of Mayo Clinic. Consistently demonstrates commitment to meet deadlines and priorities and sets a good example for others to emulate. Works effectively across departmental organizations gaining consensus of stakeholders. It is expected that this position will serve on institutional committees and/or workgroups and provide consultative expertise in their area of expertise. Will likely be asked to provide consulting services or act as an information resource and/or mentor both internally and externally to the work unit.
Network Implementation activities require a variety of skills and a range of skill levels, including advanced technical and business skills brought to the team by Systems Architects.
A Systems Architect role in Networks requires deep understanding of network principles and broad knowledge of network technologies including wired and wireless networks, LAN and WAN/MAN, data center networks, underlying network services, and network security.
Systems Architect responsibilities: Meet with practice, business, system, and application stakeholders and with IT leaders, technology partners, and peers to foster relationships and ensure network solutions to meet business and practice needs.
Translate business requirements, technical requirements, and high-level designs to workable solutions, low-level designs, and implementation plans.
Demonstrate technical leadership, initiative, independent judgment, responsibility and ownership.
Act as a subject matter expert for multiple technologies, products, and services. Act as the steward for several products and services as needed.
Undertake, lead, manage, or oversee advanced implementation projects and tasks.
Help guide the technical and professional development of specialists and engineers.
Responsible for implementing and supporting Cisco ISE services. Responsible for building and supporting TrustSec segments. Responsible for deploying, maintaining, and supporting RADIUS environment. Responsible for assisting endpoint team in deployment and remediation of 802.1X.
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of demonstrated technical experience and 1 year of demonstrated leadership experience or an Associate’s degree plus 7 years of demonstrated technical experience and 1 year of demonstrated leadership experience. A high school diploma and 9 years of demonstrated IT technical experience focused on proficiency in managing operating systems, including configuration, internals, and maintenance processes in a large, complex organization like Mayo Clinic plus 1 year of demonstrated leadership experience may be considered in lieu of the degree.
Experience with data networks in a large healthcare environment.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in relevant technical discipline.
Specific job skills
— Very strong knowledge of Cisco ISE
— Proficiency with Network Access Control, profiling, and segmentation using Cisco ISE
— Strong knowledge of RADIUS and EAP protocols
— Strong knowledge of wired 802.1X deployments
— Strong knowledge of routing/switching concepts
— Strong troubleshooting/packet capture analysis skills
— Strong knowledge of Cisco TrustSec
— Strong knowledge of wireless authentication protocols (802.11r, 802.1X)
— Good knowledge of RADIUS, DHCP, SNMP, DNS and HTTP protocols
— Good knowledge of TACACS+ protocol
— Good knowledge of Netflow protocol
— Good scripting/excel skills
— Good communication skills
— Experience using StealthWatch a plus
— Experience with Active Directory a plus
— Experience with Active Directory Certificate Services/PKI infrastructure a plus
— Experience using F5 LTM load balancing a plus
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $3,624.00, based on a full-time position.
Hours / Pay period
Generally regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, and occasional evenings, nights, and weekends. May share on-call rotation.
